Why is an IVF Technique Used to Treat Infertility?

Nowadays, many couples experience infertility problems which can be due to male or female medical conditions. If you are that couple suffering from Infertility, you may be wondering what your treatment options are. One common treatment for Infertility is In Vitro Fertilization or IVF.

But what exactly is the IVF technique, and why is it used to treat Infertility? Read ahead to learn more about this popular and effective fertility treatment that is giving the happiness of parenthood to many infertile couples.

What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

Method of Assisted Reproductive Technology, known as IVF, involves extracting eggs from a female partner, obtaining sperm from a male partner, and then manually fertilizing them in a Petri dish in a lab. It develops into an embryo and is then placed into the womb to make the woman pregnant.

In ART, the embryo(s) can be transferred into the uterus/womb by using two methods - the gamete intrafallopian (GIFT) or the zygote intrafallopian (ZIFT).

Why is the IVF technique used?

The IVF technique is useful for treating Infertility in the following patients:

  • Damaged or Blocked Fallopian Tubes

During fertilization, the mature egg travels through the fallopian tube and then into the uterus. If the fallopian tube gets damaged or obstructed, the fertilized egg will not proceed through the fallopian tube and reach the uterus.

  • Reduced sperm count or motility due to male factor infertility.

Males are infertile if their sperm do not function optimally, their quality is compromised, or the sperm count is low.

  • Endometriosis

A uterus' liner grows outside the body. This happens 15% to 20% of the time when you're of reproductive age, and it negatively impacts fertility parameters such as whether your eggs are viable, how good they are, and whether they are easy to implant.

  • Genetically Predisposed Individuals

In cases where either or both couples have genetic diseases that could be inherited, checks can be performed to ensure a genetically robust embryo is implanted. Embryo genetic robustness can be determined by analyzing the embryo's chromosomal content or by performing non-invasive preimplantation genetic testing. In order to prevent passing on inherited disorders to the IVF baby, only embryos that have no abnormal genetic content are implanted through the IVF technique.

  • Unexplained Infertility.

A successful IVF treatment involves examining the case thoroughly, treating any existing conditions, and then performing the procedure. So if you're infertile, you might consider it if you can't pinpoint the exact cause.

  • Poor Egg Quality

After fertilization in the fallopian tube, poor egg quality causes embryos to travel downward and implant into the uterus. An embryo with chromosomal abnormalities will be rejected by the body, causing Infertility in women over 35. Moreover, poor egg quality can also compromise the embryo's quality.

  • According to the CDC (or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a relatively safe process in which eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory.
  • IVF is considered the most successful and precise fertility treatment available, with an estimated live birth rate of 40% to 50% per cycle.

When it comes to the IVF financial aspect, the  IVF cost in India can be up to INR 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh. It is always crucial to consult with your doctor about the risks and benefits of IVF before making a decision.

In a Nutshell

IVF technique is often used when there are problems with the sperm or when the woman has difficulty conceiving because of her cervical mucus. The IVF cost is reasonable as it gives the happiest moments of your life, making you a parent. If you have been struggling to conceive, visit your doctor about whether IVF might be right for you.
